Ingredients

For the dough

  • 2 cups warm water (about 110°F) Make sure the water is warm, not hot.
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast This activates the fermentation process.
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar Feeds the yeast and enhances flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon salt Strengthens gluten structure.
  • 5-6 cups all-purpose flour Plus extra for kneading, adjust as necessary.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or cooking spray For greasing bowl and pan.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, pour in the warm water. Sprinkle the yeast and sugar over the water and let sit for 5 to 10 minutes until frothy.
  • Add in the salt and gradually mix in the flour one cup at a time until a shaggy dough forms.

Kneading

  • Transfer the shaggy dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Use the 'windowpane test' to check readiness.

Rising

  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size.
  • After rising, punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan. Let rise again for 30 minutes.

Baking

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F. Bake the dough for about 30 to 35 minutes or until the crust turns golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

To enhance flavor, consider adding herbs or cheese during the mixing stage. Store the bread wrapped tightly at room temperature for up to three days or freeze for longer preservation. Reheat slices in a toaster or pre-heated oven.
